commensurate – proportional, equal, appropriate – did we get back any commensurate with the risk we took?

ebbulient – happy, enthusiastic

imperturbable – immovable, unshakable, consistently calm – Obama seemed imperturbable during the election campaign, something he doesn’t seem to be now.

obviate – do away with, avoid – Michael Jackson tried to obviate any legal charges against him – if you eat healthy, you will obviate the need to visit doctors so often.

compendium - collection, list – the library is a compendium of all kinds of literary works

eclectic – varied, chosen from everywhere, selected from places – what an eclectic collection of flowers you’ve got, you have an eclectic taste of music – eclectic styles of art

impervious – not responsive, not let someone through – impervious to the fact that a man was dying in front of him, Harry did not call 911 – the operating system introduced yesterday was impervious to attack by hackers.

occlude – block, stop, cutoff, shut, seal – sounds like the opposite of include – some infections can completely occlude the ear canal and make a person deaf

complaisant – seeking to please – The delegates were complaisant to each other, they yielded to each other’s demands.

efficacy – effectiveness – The new intern at our place does his job with great efficacy. – we want a device that we can use with safety and efficacy.

implacable – unpleasable, someone you just can’t please – that implacable biatch, I’ve bought her ten shots already and she wouldn’t even talk to me.

officious – meddlesome, bossy, annoying, irritating, unofficial – at first i thought it meant official, but its quite the opposite – sometimes it can be used to describe someone too eager to serve – YAHOO stands for Yet Another Hierarchically Officious Oracle

reprobate – immoral, someone religiously damned, a bad person – related to reproach – This guy is an ugly, incorrigible, wife-beating reprobate. – someone who canot be under probation anymore

So yea, there’s the end of the high frequency word list. It took way longer than I thought. Whatever.

coagulate - thicken, clot – with time, milk coagulates into yogurt

dogmatic – inflexible, rigid, narrow – mostly used to describe someone’s opinion – Hitler had dogmatic beliefs about Judaism. – Atheists generally recant dogmatic religious beliefs.

impassive – unemotional, blank, poker-faced – Obama’s face remained impassive even in the middle of a crisis.

passive – same meaning – inert, inactive – passive resistance is nonviolent resistance

neophyte – beginner, recent convert to a religion – comes from greek root “newly planted”

recondite – understood only by experts, dealing with difficult material – That music has recondite intricacy I tell you – Ancient scripts were recondite, only a handful people have been able to decipher them.

welter – chaos, confused mass – welter-weight comes from this word. I am guessing that since welterweights are between light and middle weights, they are considered a confused weight lying in between. – The public had a welter of expectations for the national basketball team in the olympics. – a welter of helter-skeltors.

refractory – stubborn, rebellious, uncontrollable – A refractory material is one that is unaffected by high temperatures – a refractory disease, like a refractory infection, is a disease that resists treatment.

impede – hinder, block – a single mistake can impede you from success.

obsequious – eager to please or obey – people often wrongly elect obsequious politicians

dupe – fool, trick – that dude got duped by that woman!

cogent – convincing, persuasive, logically sound – Obama gave a cogent analysis of the need for healthcare. – A cogent argument is the best proof of your theory.

zealot – a zealous supporter or follower

coda – final section of a musical note, conclusion, ending

distend - stretch, expand, swell – In the hot sun, blood vessels distend to release more heat. – Interest rates will keep distending until we get a recession. So lets have a recession! – In medicine, distention is often used as a term for swelling due to internal force. ‘On inhalation there is a distension of lungs’, ‘bloating is a common term for distension of the abdomen’, ‘distended abdomen from gas’.

rarefied - made rare, purged of anything ordinary and tasteless – In the World Cup semi-finals, four rarefied teams fight for the pinnacle of world soccer. – Ballet dancers are rarefied professionals, the way they express emotions through their body is eccentric.

vituperative - rant, swearing

bilious – nauseating, full of bile – His comments in the press were vituperative and bilious and would never earn him a presidential nomination.

Yes, I lost track. Who doesn’t. From now on, I want to go over lesser words maybe, and not overload myself with too many.

bombastic - pompous, extravagent, full of words(think bombs) – Man Obama gives a bombastic speech!

Grandiloquent - pompous or extravagent manner of talking or writing – comes from “grand” and “loqui”(speaking) – ‘loqui’ is a general root word for speaking, like in eloquent, and soliloquy

disparage – critisice, go against, talk against someone – during the elections, each contestant tries their best to disparage the opponents. The person with the most disparaging and insulting remarks usually wins.

propitiate – win somebody’s favour, appease – in nepal, an airline company sacrificed a goat to propitiate the gods and solve their aircraft engine problems.

propitious – favourable, promising of good – auspicious means success in the future, propitious means favourable.

truculent – hostile, defiant – India’s traditional climate stance, could be summed up in one truculent sentence: The developed world had caused the problem and the developed world should fix it.

truce – ceasefire, agreement not to fight – during world war 1, some countries’ soldiers held an unofficial truce on Christmas Day. They just didn’t fight.

propriety – good manners, appropriateness, respectable – same root as appropriate – to be ‘propa’ – I would like to question the propriety of commercializing a holy festival. I think its a horrible idea.

guileless – frank, open – opposite of guile which means ‘cunning’ or ‘shrewd’

gullible – susceptible, naive, innocent

mendacious – untruthful, decietful – related to mending, someone who wants to mend situations to suit his desires.

mendacity – lies, deciet – mend is related to lying

proscribe – ban, bar, forbid – you would think it is something positive considering it starts with ‘pro’ – it comes from ‘pro’ or before and ‘scribe’ or write, suggesting a written order? Completely opposite of prescribe which means recommend, like a prescription

dissemble – pretend, act, mislead -

disseminate – broadcast, spread – trees disseminate pollen right before the spring to fertilize.

callous – heartless, unfeeling, uncaring

burgeon – grow, increase in size – Taxes and interest rate are burgeoning day by day dammit! I want freedom. The nuclear bomb exploded with a burgeoning cloud of smoke.

gouge – to carve a hole into something, to cut something, puncture an eyeball with your thumb – a gouge is also a tool : http://images.google.com/images?rlz=1C1GGLS_enUS351US352&sourceid=chrome&q=gouge&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi

disabuse – come to realize that something is false – maybe comes from stopping being abused by false ideas ? – I was quickly disabused of my idealistic notions after this experience – Sherryl disabused him by telling him the truth about his wife’s death.

fledgling – inexperienced person, young bird – fledge means becoming capable of flying – John is a fledgling soccer player, he will be pretty good one day.

diffident – lacking confidence, unsure – comes from the root fidere, same as confidence and fidelity – The CEO was diffident when asked about the latest company scam.

The following words are from this article : http://www.autotalk.com/5-reasons-to-buy-a-toyota-3398/

vacillate – unable to decidde, swing back and forth – Toyota executives kept giving vacillating assurances to customers who had the gas pedal problem.

disparage – criticize, disapprove – Hitler disparaged the Jews by calling them a lowly race.

relegate – to demote something or exile someone – He has been relegated to a post where he won’t have much control of the company.

subpoena – summon, order, call – poena is latin for penalty, so sub-poena comes from under-penalty.

sterling – this guy has two meanings -a)genuine, authentic and b)excellent, exceptional, matchless

artless – without art? not at all. it means natural, genuine, without deception, guilless – such an artless woman, pure of heart and spirit

guile – deceit, cunningness

felicitous (and felicity) – a)happy b)appropriate or pleasing manner

voracious – very hungry, eager – fans are voracious to listen to the new Madonna song. I am sure they will devour it.

laconic -concise, abrupt – from Greek. Lakonikos, from Lakon ”person from Lakonia,” the district around Sparta in southern Greece in ancient times, whose inhabitants were famously proud of their brevity of speech.

precarious – unwarranted, shaky, risky – storm made travel precarious for Minnesota drivers today, stay tuned for more.

So yea, I missed 2 days completely. I wish I hadn’t, because it means I have to go quicker today to cover up all the words. My Bad.

moribund – dying, bound to die – think ‘mortal’ and ‘morgue’ all come from the same roots (‘mor’ death) – Obama went to Egypt to revive the moribund peace talks in the Middle East

bravura – dazzling with artistic flair, showy display – Obama’s speeches are generally a bravura attempt to revive hope in people.

virtuoso – exceptional performer, conniseur

superlative – excellent quality, of highest degree of comparison

bluster – speak loudly and in a bullying way, harangue, berate

purport – claim to be something, intend something – The author of the book purports that it will change the reader’s mind – Second meaning is ‘purpose, intention’ – The purport of the remarks was difficult to dircern.

placate – to calm someone, to make someone less angry – comes from the same roots as please, to please someone - inplacable(something that can’t be calmed down) – “This beer amendment is will hopefully placate liqour store owners by giving them tax cuts” said the Beer Baron.

intractable – stubborn, obstinate

obdurate – same meaning – like obstinate but also like durable

exculpate – prove somebody innocent – inculpate is to prove someone guilty – fairly easy, related to culprit

deride – ridicule – don’t deride my people with your demeaning remarks, b**ch! You dont know shit about this world.

anomalous – irregular, unusual – an anomaly is something out of the ordinary, an exception to the rule. In Futurama, Anomaly is a rift in the space-time continuum.

antipathy – negative, loathing feeling – sympathy is positive feeling, apathy is lack of feeling, antipathy is negative feeling

derivative – derived from somewhere, not original – like derivatives in calculus

exigengy – urgent need, emergency – exigence means need – sounds a lot like emergency, but maybe less urgent? In writing, the exigence for writing something is why you wrote it. like maybe as an assignment, or because it was an essay for the GRE. This compared to purpose, which is what you’re trying to accomplish in the writing.

intransigent – unwilling to compromise, unwilling to sway – a passenger who doesn’t want a transit in his flight, lol.

plasticity – ability to be molded, malleable – That dud’s so plastic, I can convince him to do anything I want. I feel like I’m a mind mender, man.

sporadic – occuring irregularly, not consistent – describes a disease that does not spread like an endemic, but occurs in isolated instances – Reports said that the swine flu was a sporadic problem in the country, but I don’t know why it seems to be really common in my town. Also used to refer to something that is, say, random or unpredictable – I have these sporadic urges to beat someone up, doctor, can I punch you right now?

platitude – a banal statement made as if it were significant – reminds me of Sarah Palin. Thats all I’m gonna say.

inundate – overwhelm or flood – I was inundated by the pressure that the society applied on me to do the ‘right’ thing – floodwaters inundated much of Minnesota yesterday.

extrapolate – infer

desiccate – dry up, loosen moisture – a siccative is a substance added to liquids to speed drying -

stint – has two meanings – one is a stretch, time, second is miserly, to hold back – That guy did a stint in the army before coming to work here. You can’t give a dollar for he earthquake, you’re a fuckin’ stint, you skimp.

stipulate – lay down, comment, demand – this word seems to be used in ways different from the dictionary meaning. Seems like a word used in many cases. “John stipulated that he drive the car”, “Let us stipulate that global warming is a scam and analyze this issue” . “I will stipulate that in the real world, poverty is not a choice.”

stolid – unemotional, not easily excited or upset – After an election, the elected like to put on a stolid and staid face, while inside they are bursting with excitement.

facetious – supposed to be funny, intended to be funny but often silly or inappropriate -

flippant – same meaning – impulsive and frivolous

inebriated – get someone drunk – The woman was accompanied by her inebriated and raucous husband.

fallacious – related to fallacy – means misconception, mistaken belief or idea – Ascribing human personality characteristics to cold-blooded animals is at best fallacious and at worst destructive of our outdoor traditions.

diatribe – bitter criticism of something, a rant – Steve Jobs always starts going on a diatribe about how all other companies are lazy and stupid. I think you are the stupid one, Mr.Jobs, or you wouldn’t have been fired from your own company! Like, is that even possible ?!

inure – to make someone get used to something unpleasant, to harden someone to something – By forcing Matt to wake up at 5am everyday, his parents inured him into the habit – I’m not often fazed by celebrity sightings, covering sports will inure you to such things – related to endure, I’m guessing – I am inured to pain, I grew up on shutter island biatch.

irascible – quick tempered, angered easily – “I Have Never Met a Poet Worth A Damn that was Not Irascible” – Ezra Pound. I think Glenn Beck is quite irascible as soon as someone starts to talk rationally in front of him.

invective – abusive language, using abuse – This is too surprising. That word does not sound rash or abusive at all. Its almost ‘inventive’ – God save the public from this invective, that guys just cursing at strangers on the street.

deterrent – something that deters someone from doing something – Law is a powerful deterrent, people say, and its true. I deterred from using detergent to wash clothes after that shit was banned.

desultory – to not focus on one thing and keep diverting your attention to different things – I think Max has ADHD, he lovves desultory so much.

daunt - intimidate, put off, scared – it was a daunting task to capture Rome in its finest age, but Ephiliates managed to do it.

equivocate - deliberately be unclear, to speak ambiguously to mislead – Roxanne was asked for a firm answer, but she equivocated. Microsoft equivocated when asked to confirm a release date for the new version of office.

perfidious – disloyal, treacherous – I think most politicians today are guilty of perfidy.

perfunctory – done as a routine, without thinking, automatic – I was on my perfunctory evening walk when I heard a scream in the woods. – many college students think that their advisors give perfunctory advice. hmm…maybe they’re perfidious, those slimy(and smiley) bastards.

innocuous – harmless, mild, inoffensive, insignificant – Google seems innocuous at first, but thats until you realize that they might be collecting all the information you entered. Little kids seem innocuous too, until they f***in’ piss all over you.

erudite – very scholarly, learned, knowledgable – you might think that pedantics are erudite, but they’re just good at taking exams. On the other hands, you might think that pedagogues are erudite, but they might just be trying to make some money. I want to be erudite, and so I am planning to take the GRE.

decorum – dignity, modesty, good behaviour – “Decorum in the class, I say!” said my new British high school teacher, “I shall not accommodate any more twaddle in this institution.”

ambivalent -unsure, hesitant – ‘ambi’ generally gives me a sense of confusion, like in ambiguous, so ambivalent could be related to not having any clear idea..? - You’re one ambivalent kid man, decide your major, or die. There is no room for hippies.

ameliorate – improve something, better, enhance – John Edwards said that his mission was to ameliorate the nation’s poverty struck regions. A sound economy was hence, essential.

esoteric – difficult to understand, obscure- Esoteric knowledge is that which is available to only a narrow circle of ‘enlightened’ people.

occult – similar meaning – supernatural or magical – while esoteric can mean any knowledge, occult is more related to non-scientific systems. – origins from Latin word meaning “secrets”, similar to cult.

anachronism – a chronological mistake, mistaking something’s time r existence or origin – hmm…interesting – some people argue that the post office is an anachronism, no one uses it anymore, we just rely on email. Distant colonies like the British Falkland islands are post-imperialistic anachronisms.

tenable – arguable – We don’t need post offices anymore. Taking all the financial losses for it is untenable.

eulogy – spoken or written tribute, praise – check this out. Looks like today is British humor day.

insinuate – to imply something, cunningly or indirectly – comes from Latin sinus, “a wind, bend, curve” – Salesmen use this as their prime tool, I hate that – It appears Google is trying to insinuate that they have more sophisticated controls and security than they really do.

pervasive – spreading widely, something thats everywhere – They say God is pervasive, as for me, I can only guess dude. – God is near us, pervades all creation and loves all.

solicitous – plead, show concern – In England and Wales, the term soliciting refers to: “for a common prostitute to loiter or solicit in a street or public place for the purpose of prostitution”, under the Street Offences Act 1959. In the United States, solicitation can refer to the act of asking for employment on the roads. A solicitor is a lawyer – A common phrase used is ‘ to solicit employment’ – to plead employment

analogous – comparable, similar in some respect – like an analogy – a comparison

soporific – causing sleep, dull, boring – In Latin sopor is “deep sleep” – Obama thinks Republicans are soporific, they drawl on an on, reading from their speech papers

phlegmatic - calm, unemotional, apathetic – just like phlegm(mucus)- From wiki “The mucus has no feelings, it is calm and sincere and unmoving”. This is the stupidest word ever.

insipid – dull, bland – Mom, I think your food is insipid! – Why thank you dear, it seems like you’re learning complex new words – You’re welcome mom.

euphemism – a less offensive or strong synonymn – like using pass away instead of die, break wind for fart, sleep with for have sex.

delineate – describe something, draw something, mark out, set bounds, demarcate, define something – “We want to clearly delineate…this is what you should do,”‘ he said.

I realize now that earlier, there were many words that I misinterpreted the meaning of. I thought conspicuous was something related to secrecy, but it actually means noticeable and visible. So whenever I read about someone conspicuously criticising someone, I thought the support was not very public. Maybe it was the diction of the word, which sounds like a cross between conspiring and suspicious…hmm…
